What is Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech delays, and lack of verbal communication.

Autism is not a “one-size-fits-all” diagnosis. The word “spectrum” means that people with this disorder cope with a range of different issues but also with various levels of severity — from being non-communicative all the way to being capable of living independently.

According to a study in our state of Guanajuato, there may be up to 400,000 children and adolescents affected by autism who need help.*

At Niños con Autismo, we’re concerned about the number of undiagnosed and under-served children with autism here in Mexico.

Early intervention is crucial

Recognize the signs of autism in your child

Signs of autism usually appear by age 2 or 3 and can sometimes be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes later in life for people with autism.

• Social communication and interaction issues

• Restricted or repetitive behavior

• Developmental and behavioral problems

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of 2020, 1 in 36 children aged 8 was diagnosed with autism.

*In the first study of Autism in Mexico, Lead Researcher Dr. Eric Fombonne, in his study, The Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Guanajuato, Mexico; the Leon Study**, says, “the study leads us to believe that there may be up to 400,000 children and adolescents affected by autism and in need of services.”

“Of particular interest is that Mexican children with autism are being diagnosed at a very late age …” says Dr. Fombonne. He adds that nearly 78 percent of the children with autism did not receive their diagnosis until age 3. Another 22% went undiagnosed until age 5.

Research tells us that autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as ages 18 to 24 months. Diagnosis delayed until age 3 leaves children with autism without access to services and therapies for an important period of their early development.
